Report: Tottenham join Pochettino in race to sign AC Milan star

Tottenham are among the clubs vying to sign AC Milan defender Alessio Romagnoli during the summer window, according to Mundo Deportivo.

Barcelona, PSG and Manchester United are also among the teams interested in signing the left-footed star.

The 26-year-old has been at the San Siro since 2015 when he checked in from Serie A rivals Roma.

He has been a frequent performer in the Milan team, playing 221 times and scoring nine goals.

During 2020/21 he helped Stefano Pioli’s team secure a Champions League berth.

Romagnoli made 30 appearances and was the club’s captain throughout the season.

Tottenham are in the market for a central defender and appear to be targeting the Milan star.

The Italian enforcer has just a year left on his current deal and as a result, he could be sold this summer.

Romagnoli has rejected the offer of a new contract and the report claims he could leave at an affordable price.

The burly central defender earns in the region of £115,000-a-week in Italy and wouldn’t cost the earth to Spurs.

The immediate priority for Daniel Levy is to appoint a new manager. Shortly after, however, the club needs new players.

A defender will be top of the list and Romagnoli throws up a new name into the mix.

Romagnoli could be shrewd signing for Tottenham

Given his contract situation, AC Milan’s need to sell is pretty clear. As a result, Tottenham would be wise to pounce and steal a march on their rivals.

Spurs might not be at the front of the queue given that three clubs in the Champions League are keen to sign him.

Tottenham would certainly offer him a chance to play regular first-team football and at 26 he will crave that.

Spurs have been hapless at the back. Eric Dier, Davinson Sanchez and Toby Alderweireld have all struggled in the last 12 months.

Romagnoli would bring balance given that he is left-footed and is also an extremely strong defender.

Spurs have to get their summer business spot on and the 12-cap international could be an ideal signing for the club.
