French outlet Foot Mercato have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have joined Everton in the race to sign Brazilian defender Gabriel Magalhaes – despite the Lille ace having complete agreement with Serie A outfit Napoli.
Gabriel, 22, is one of the most in-demand defenders in European football this summer a couple of excellent seasons with French side Lille. He has clocked up 52 senior appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit.
The report claims Napoli and Gennaro Gattuso have an agreement in place for the Brazilian – with a fee of £20million plus bonuses agreed. Gabriel is keen on a move to Napoli and has agreed a five-year deal.
But the report also states that Lille are delaying a move as they are waiting to see if they receive a better offer. Everton have long been linked with a move for Gabriel, while Tottenham are now considering a bid.
TBR’s view – Everton or Tottenham for Gabriel?
Gabriel tasted Champions League football this season with Lille and did not look out of place, though Lille were knocked out comprehensively in the group stage. So, what next for Gabriel?
That taste of Champions League football – or at least European action – is likely to see Napoli and Tottenham best-placed to complete a deal for Gabriel. Everton have little chance of finishing in a European spot.
Spurs have more financial power than Napoli – and that could see the north Londoners land Gabriel as their replacement for Jan Vertonghen.
