Report: Tottenham interested in bringing Pau Lopez back to north London

Spanish website Estadio Deportivo claim Tottenham Hotspur are interested in bringing Pau Lopez back to the club this summer from AS Roma – but face competition from London rivals Chelsea and West Ham United.

Lopez, 25, joined Tottenham on loan during 2016-17 but failed to make a single senior appearance under Mauricio Pochettino. He played seven times for the club’s reserve side, conceding eight goals.

Since then, his career has blossomed. Lopez became a regular at Real Betis and after 10 clean sheets in 35 games, he joined Roma last summer for a fee north of £20million. This season, he has managed nine clean sheets in 34.

Now, a return to London is said to be on the cards. Tottenham want to re-sign Lopez, while Chelsea and West Ham are also keeping tabs on the Spain international – though it is believed Roma want as much as £36million.

TBR’s view – Is Lopez worth nearly £40m, in current climate?

Probably not. Even if he was worth such a figure, amid the financial restraints of the global health crisis, surely Spurs and West Ham would go against spending such a sum on a goalkeeper. Chelsea, meanwhile, could be tempted.

Hugo Lloris remains Tottenham’s captain and goalkeeper, and despite the odd mistake, is still regarded somewhat reliable. Lukasz Fabianski is one of West Ham’s best players, if not top of that list.

Chelsea, though, need a goalkeeper. Kepa Arrizabalaga is not good enough and the Blues can certainly afford to sign Lopez. Whether he is is worth that fee, though, remains to be seen.
