Spanish outlet El Chiringuito, as reported by Diario Gol, have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Real Madrid striker Mariano Diaz this summer.

Spurs have already been linked with a number of Real Madrid stars, namely Marco Asensio and Dani Ceballos while Gareth Bale constantly continues to be rumoured with a return to the north London club.

Diaz, 25, came through the ranks at Real before leaving the club to join Olympique Lyonnais in the summer of 2017. He impressed at Lyon, scoring 21 goals in 48 games and Real opted to bring him back to the Santiago Bernabeu.

But he was used very sparingly last season. Indeed, the Dominican Republic international managed just 22 appearances, 16 of which were as a substitute. He scored four goals.

Mariano, who cost Real a whopping £29.7million (BBC) last summer, remains second fiddle to the likes of Karim Benzema and could look to leave his boyhood club for a second time. Tottenham are said to be keen.

TBR’s view – Mariano would be excellent Tottenham back-up

It is clear that Spurs are now active in this summer’s window. After failing to make any signings since January 2018, they completed two deals for Jack Clarke and Tanguy Ndombele on Tuesday.

But the club still need additions elsewhere. A right-back may be required, while Mauricio Pochettino is being linked with the likes of Ryan Sessegnon, Giovani Lo Celso and a new back-up striker.

The loss of Fernando Llorente has opened up a gap, with Vincent Janssen not considered good enough. Mariano certainly would be, if Spurs can agree a fee with Real.
