Report: Tottenham interested in Ajax youngster Charlie Setford
Tottenham Hotspur are interested in Ajax youngster Charlie Setford, with the Daily Mail reporting that the goalkeeper’s contract expires at the end of the season.
Setford was born in the Netherlands and has represented them at youth level. However, it appears that he is looking to pursue a career in the England setup, having played for the Three Lions at under-16 and under-18 level.
The teenager spoke to the BBC earlier this year about his dream being to play in the Premier League. And it seems that he may soon be offered the chance.
Tottenham eyeing Charlie Setford
According to the Daily Mail, Setford is wanted by a host of clubs across Europe as his contract with Ajax runs into its final few months.
Tottenham, Everton and Southampton all want to sign the 18-year-old. Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund and Roma also have their eye on the goalkeeper.
Of course, clubs outside the Netherlands will be able to discuss a pre-contract deal with Setford in the coming weeks.
Setford is yet to represent Ajax’s first-team. However, he has been on the bench for the senior side. And the amount of interest in him arguably tells its own story.
Of course, Tottenham will need to make a big goalkeeper signing sooner or later. Hugo Lloris is coming towards the end of his career. And replacing him is going to be a massive task for Spurs.
Lloris could potentially carry on for a couple more years yet. But you would imagine Setford is being eyed at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium as one for even further down the line.
It will be interesting to see where Setford feels he should go should he decide to leave the Eredivisie champions.
