Report: Tottenham in talks with club over selling 24-year-old, he’s open to leaving Spurs

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly in talks with Valencia over a potential move for Harry Winks, according to Spanish outlet AS.

The 24-year-old has come through the ranks at Spurs and has made 159 competitive appearances to date, registering three goals and three assists.

He played 41 times across all competitions for Tottenham in the last two seasons, but found himself somewhat out of favour under Jose Mourinho at the start of the 2020-21 campaign.

This term, Winks has 16 appearances under his belt, but just seven of those have been in the Premier League, though he has started Spurs’ last two top-flight games.

In addition, Mourinho said before Christmas there was “no way” the England international would be leaving in January.

This hasn’t stopped transfer talk from emerging, however, and AS have now claimed that Valencia and Spurs have been discussing the availability of Winks this month.

Spurs are reportedly open to letting Winks leave, while the midfielder is said to like the idea of heading to the Mestalla stadium.

However, talks are believed to have stalled, with Valencia reportedly unwilling to meet Tottenham’s demands.

The report states that Spurs are only willing to let Winks leave on a permanent basis, and Valencia are unwilling to pay their asking price.

Winks is contracted to Tottenham until the summer of 2024, reportedly on £50,000-a-week.

TBR View:

Winks is a talented player who has looked much better in recent outings, and a combination of more game time and Mourinho’s prior “hands-off” comments would suggest he’s not going anywhere.

That said, it remains to be seen whether the Spurs boss sees Winks as a long-term fixture in the starting XI or more of a rotation player, and if the latter, how much he’d be prepared to sell him for if the price was right.

In turn, the midfielder has to decide whether to stick with Spurs and continue fighting to cement his place in the XI, or to twist and go somewhere else he might be a regular starter – so there could be some legs to this.
