Report: Tottenham in talks for defender but Everton, West Ham and Fulham also keen
Italian outlet Il Mattino have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have opened talks over a move to sign experienced Napoli defender Nikola Maksimovic potentially before the January deadline – but face competition from three Premier League sides.
Maksimovic, 29, has been in and out of the Napoli side of late – clocking up only 14 appearances this season for Gennaro Gattuso’s side. As first reserve in central defence for Napoli, he has only played eight league games under the Italian legend.
Now, the 25-time Serbia international is out of contract in the summer and Napoli are willing to sell him this month in order to bring in some cash for his signature. Spurs are in talks to sign him, but are not the only Premier League club interested.
Indeed, Fulham, Everton and West Ham are also interested in signing Maksimovic this month – with Napoli looking to rake in around £9million for his signature. It remains to be seen if a deal can be done before the end of the window.
TBR’s view – Maksimovic would represent a Tottenham panic buy
Do Spurs really need another centre-back? It is clear that Jose Mourinho wants a commanding central defender – one that improves his current options. That is understandable, but to bring in one that is certainly not an improvement is questionable.
Maksimovic has experience, he is comfortable on the ball and he is good in the air. But he is a first reserve for Napoli and there are reasons for that, a lack of pace being one. £9million is cheap, but Spurs can do better. They should wait until the summer.
