Report: Tottenham in five-club chase to sign Mesut Ozil’s new teammate

Turkish newspaper Fanatik have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur have joined four other European clubs in the race to sign Fenerbahce goalkeeper Altay Bayindir, who has impressed since joining Mesut Ozil’s new club.

Bayindir, 23, has now clocked up 60 appearances for Fener since moving to one of Turkey’s biggest clubs from Ankaragucu in the summer of 2019. During those matches, he has conceded 73 goals but kept a decent tally of 14 clean sheets.

However, he remains uncapped at international level. But he has been called up by his country and clubs are beginning to take notice of the shot stopper, with Ajax identifying the Turk as their first choice to replace Andre Onana, who is expected to leave.

Tottenham have joined Ajax in the race to sign Bayindir – but other European sides are interested, too. French club Lille want him, as do German sides Schalke and Werder Bremen. He has a contract at Fenerbahce until the summer of 2023.

TBR’s view – Lloris needs replacing

Even Glenn Hoddle has lost patience with the Spurs skipper, after conceding eight goals in his last two games. During the 3-0 defeat to Manchester City, he should have saved Rodri’s penalty and then failed to stop Ilkay Gundogan’s first effort.

Is Bayindir the answer? Who knows. But Tottenham do need a goalkeeper that can come in and finally replace Lloris. Perhaps a move established goalkeeper would make sense – Onana for example, would make sense.
