French outlet Foot Mercato have claimed that Tottenham Hotspur are in contact with West Ham United star Issa Diop’s representatives over a move to north London – and that the defender has spoken about Spurs with a current Tottenham player.
Diop, 23, has starred for West Ham over the past couple of seasons – clocking up 64 appearances in all competitions for the Hammers since his move from Toulouse. This summer, Diop is being linked with a Hammers exit.
Indeed, the signing made by Manuel Pellegrini has attracted interest from some of the Premier League’s biggest clubs and Tottenham are now keen. Jose Mourinho was impressed in 2018, describing Diop as: “A monster who dominated in the duels.”
It is believed that interested parties will have to spend a huge £52million to sign Diop, but Spurs look sure to be leading the race. That is because Diop is open to a move and has contacted Aurier to discuss Tottenham.
TBR’s view – Perfect Vertonghen replacement
With the Belgian due to leave in the coming months, Tottenham need a replacement for Diop and the Frenchman would be a top addition in the veteran’s place – not least because he is a decade Vertonghen’s junior.
Though he is quite expensive, Diop would vastly improve Tottenham’s leaky backline and if Mourinho wants to use a three-man defence, Diop is more than accustomed to playing that way, having done so for the Hammers. A top, top signing.
