Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly rekindled their interest in Cengiz Under but Premier League rivals Everton are believed to be in pole position for the Roma winger’s signature, according to Tuttomercatoweb.
The Turkey international was originally said to be on Tottenham’s radar before moving to Italy, with Ajansspor reporting two years ago that a move to North London was apparently close and, according to Turkish Football, Spurs reportedly tried to make contact with Roma last June.
The report added that Arsenal had also contacted the Serie A side to sound out a move for Under, and that Roma valued him at around £44million, but on 15 August, the Serie A club confirmed that he had penned a new contract until 2023, seemingly putting an end to speculation.
Since then, Under briefly fell out of favour under Paulo Fonseca but went on to reclaim his place in Roma’s starting XI before the Serie A season was suspended, and his tally this season stands at 20 appearances in all competitions, with three goals (Transfermarkt).
Tuttomercatoweb‘s latest report claims that Roma may decide to part ways with Under due to a glut of other players in that position, with Everton leading the race for him and Toffees head coach Carlo Ancelotti keen to bring him to Goodison Park, having previously wanted him at Napoli.
The report also suggests that Tottenham are keen on the 22-year-old, but Ancelotti’s interest in Under is believed to be pushing Everton to the front of the queue for the player, who is purportedly valued at €30million (£26.5million) but with a possibility of the fee going down due to the knock-on effects of the global health crisis.
Under signed a new Roma deal to much fanfare last summer but things haven’t quite gone to plan and, with Carlez Perez and Nicolo Zaniolo reportedly favoured by Fonseca, there’s a possibility the Turkish ace may be on the way out of the Eternal City.
The attacking ace is certainly a player of the highest calibre, with Turkey legend Emre Belozoglu having previously told the Gazzetta dello Sport: “Cengiz is very young. But he is a talent that can reach the very top.”
Belozoglu also suggested that Under should leave Roma and hoped to see him at a team like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Manchester City or Bayern Munich – with such a ringing endorsement, £26.5million for a wonderfully talented 22-year-old almost seems like a bargain.
