There is a “growing belief” in the Tottenham Hotspur camp that defender Toby Alderweireld will sign a new contract, Football London reports.
Alderweireld and Tottenham have come to a standstill in the recent past in terms of a contract extension. With his current deal expiring in summer 2020, his future at Tottenham has been up in the air.
But a combination of factors could prompt Alderweireld to commit his future to the north London club. One of those is the appointment of Jose Mourinho. Alderweireld is said to be very happy with this decision.
The Belgium defender is also expecting his second child which could dissuade him from relocating. Plus, Mourinho is a big fan of Alderweireld. He repeatedly tried to sign him at Manchester United. With that added confidence, he could be convinced to stay.
Tottenham and Alderweireld stopped negotiating recently after coming to an impasse. There is now a “growing belief” that discussions could be reopened. Tottenham also remain hopeful of Jan Vertonghen staying too.
Keeping Alderweireld and Vertonghen and getting them content and back in form could be vital for Spurs. This has to be Mourinho’s priority.
Alderweireld has the ideal experience to take Spurs forward under their new boss. The 30-year-old is a top-class defender when fit and the Mourinho factor could keep him at Tottenham.
