Portuguese outlet CM Journal claim Tottenham Hotspur have had a £38.6million bid rejected for Benfica wonderkid Gedson Fernandes, ahead of the summer window.
Spurs are likely to be after a central midfielder this summer, after failing to replace Mousa Dembele in January. The Belgian moved to the Chinese Super League, and his departure has been felt.
Had it not been for the excellent performances of Moussa Sissoko since being changed from a winger to a central midfielder, Spurs would have struggled. Harry Winks, Victor Wanyama and Eric Dier have all struggled with injury.
The offer has been deemed below Benfica’s valuation of the 20-year-old Portugal Under-21 international, and it remains to be seen if the north Londoners will return with an improved offer.

TBR’s view
Gedson is an excellent midfielder. He has been a regular for the Champions League side this season, since breaking through the academy into the first team at the beginning of the campaign.
He has clocked up 44 appearances in all competitions for Benfica, scoring three goals and adding six assists. Goals from the middle of the park is something Spurs lack.
However, a club-record fee to sign Gedson could be required after the £38.6m rejected offer. That record currently stands at £42million for Davinson Sanchez, and the jury remains on whether Gedson is worth such an offer.
