Report: Tottenham eye Schalke goalkeeper Alexander Nubel

TalkSPORT’s European Football expert Kevin Hatchard has told the radio station that Tottenham Hotspur are interested in signing Schalke goalkeeper Alexander Nubel, who has been likened to Manuel Neuer for his displays.

Nubel, 23, broke into the Schalke team last season but was instantly named captain of the Bundesliga outfit at the beginning of the campaign. He has since clocked up 38 senior appearances for Schalke, conceding 49 goals but keeping 13 clean sheets.

A regular in Germany’s Under-21 side with 17 caps at that level, Nubel’s future at Schalke is now in doubt despite being captain of the club and indeed the number-one choice between the sticks. That is because he is in a similar position to three Spurs stars.

Nubel is in the final months of his contract and will be allowed to talk to non-German clubs from January 1 under the Bosman ruling – or perhaps a cut-price fee. Christian Eriksen, Jan Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld are in a similar position.

Hatchard said: “Spurs were linked with him in the summer and my understanding is they are keeping an eye on what is going on in that situation. He is out of contract at the end of the season and hasn’t signed a new one yet.”

TBR’s view – Nubel would be an excellent signing, and on the cheap

Hugo Lloris is currently injured but the belief is that the Frenchman has been declining for some time and that he will not be good enough to remain number one beyond this season. Paulo Gazzaniga is a second back up.

Nubel is showing enormous potential, but not only that, he is offering quality that is good enough to rival the likes of Neuer and Marc-Andre ter Stegen in the national side. He is boasting leadership, and would certainly be first choice for Spurs.

On a free for next summer, or indeed as part of a cut-price deal in January, Nubel would be a superb signing for Spurs.
