Report: Tottenham expected to make Ashley Phillips bid this summer

Tottenham Hotspur are planning to make an improved bid for Ashley Phillips in the summer, with the Daily Express reporting that they failed with two offers in January.

Phillips is definitely one to watch in the years to come. He is yet to make his debut for Blackburn Rovers. But Tony Mowbray did include the 16-year-old on the bench for their recent FA Cup tie with Wigan.

He is also playing regularly for the under-23s. He even captained the side for their most recent Premier League 2 tie. And it proved to be a successful occasion as Blackburn ran out 6-0 winners.

The Daily Express reports that Manchester United and Chelsea have been scouting Phillips. But it would appear that Tottenham have looked to steal a march on their rivals.

It is claimed that Spurs made two offers in January. The second would have seen Rovers net up to £5 million. However, the Championship promotion-chasers were able to keep Antonio Conte’s men at bay.

Tottenham are planning to make a bigger offer for Phillips in the summer. The Daily Express adds that Spurs are expected to be one of the busiest Premier League sides in the next window.

‘Phenomenal’ Phillips may prove to be shrewd signing for Tottenham

Of course, Tottenham fans are desperately waiting to see how Conte is able to improve the first-team squad this summer. It is clear that big changes are on the horizon.

Signing a 16-year-old may not capture the imagination. But Phillips is rated extremely highly.

Mowbray suggested that he is a ‘phenomenal young boy‘. And clearly, a raft of the biggest sides in the Premier League believe that they need to keep monitoring the centre-back.

Tottenham hope to remain in the driving seat with plans already in place to make an improved bid when the window opens.
