Report: Tottenham, Everton, Newcastle and West Ham make contact for Barcelona star

Spanish outlet SPORT have claimed that Premier League quartet Newcastle United, Everton, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United have all initiated contact with Barcelona over a move for Brazilian right-back Emerson this summer.

Emerson, 21, has spent the last 18 months at Real Betis and has since clocked up 31 appearances in all competitions for the La Liga outfit – having a hand in eight goals during his spell on loan. He has even earned his first senior Brazil cap.

However, Barcelona are not fully convinced, since signing the right-back from Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro. Yet to make a senior outing for Barcelona, the Spanish giants are open to another loan this summer – or selling him permanently.

Indeed, Newcastle, Everton, West Ham and Tottenham have all opened talks with Barcelona over a move to lure the young Brazilian to England. Barcelona have set an asking price of £17.5million for the right-back.

TBR’s view – Which club needs him most?

Tottenham need a right-back, even if Serge Aurier remains – despite AC Milan links. Aurier has been a liability but with no competition, he has retained his place in the side. Emerson would give him a strong run for his money.

West Ham have Ryan Fredericks and Pablo Zabaleta, but the latter is ageing and may need replacing. Newcastle’s potential new owners could have plenty of money to spend and may want to replace Emil Krafth and DeAndre Yedlin.

Everton boast Djibril Sidibe, but he is only on loan. Jonjoe Kenny could return after shining at Schalke, while also boasting Seamus Coleman. Who needs him the most? Everton are best equipped, while Tottenham need cover.

But in terms of quality, West Ham have the worst options. Whether Spurs, Everton and West Ham can cope with Newcastle’s new spending power, remains to be seen.
