Tottenham Hotspur decided against making a move for Sven Botman this summer due to concerns over his lack of experience playing as part of a back three, according to a report from The Athletic.
Spurs are continuing their search for a new centre-back. Antonio Conte’s men have been one of the pace-setters in the transfer market. But they remain on the lookout for a new defender.

Clement Lenglet looks the most likely addition right now. The Athletic notes that no move is imminent. But a one-year loan deal is on the cards.
Lenglet was not a top target for Fabio Paratici. But they have been unsuccessful in bids to sign the likes of Josko Gvardiol and Alessandro Bastoni.

And The Athletic suggests that they also considered a bid for Botman before he joined Newcastle. The Magpies spent £35 million to sign the Dutchman from Lille.
Tottenham had previously been linked with the 22-year-old. But there was not a lot of noise concerning their interest in the weeks leading up to his Tyneside move.
And that may be because Spurs decided that Botman was ultimately not the right player for them. The Athletic reports that his lack of experience in a back three put Tottenham off.
Tottenham decided against Botman move
Tottenham fans may now be tempted to keep one eye on how Botman fares at Newcastle. He is clearly a very talented player with a big future ahead.
Should he impress in the Premier League, Spurs fans will wonder if they missed a trick – particularly if Lenglet is not able to make the grade in North London.
Obviously, signing Lenglet would have its benefits for Tottenham. He does have experience and would not take a bite out of the transfer budget.
But if Botman does well, some will wonder if Tottenham should have paid the money for him instead.
