Tottenham transfer: Manchester United man reportedly on Spurs radar
Journalist Julien Laurens has suggested that Tottenham could go in for Manchester United forward Anthony Martial this summer.
He’s told the ESPN FC podcast how Spurs nearly signed him five years ago. It’s also been suggested that they would be interested in signing him now.
Laurens said: “Spurs were close to signing him before he moved to United. There will be a lot of clubs after him though.
“I think Spurs would be interested in signing him because he will be much cheaper than what United paid for him.”
Martial could fall down the United pecking order. A deal to sign Jadon Sancho looks close and that won’t be good news for the Frenchman.
It’s fair to say that the 25-year-old is yet to showcase his true potential. He promised so much when he burst onto the scene but has struggled for consistency.
Last season he scored seven goals and claimed nine assists in all competitions. He did play a lot of his football as a centre-forward too. Edinson Cavani re-signing for a season might not help his case for football, however.
Nuno Espirito Santo has arrived at Tottenham to replace Jose Mourinho. He will want to dip into the transfer market pretty quickly, with pre-season around the corner.
Harry Kane has been linked with a move away from Tottenham. If he does go, Espirito Santo will have to move sharpish to land a replacement striker.
It’s fair to say Martial isn’t in the same bracket as Kane. He would, however, provide Spurs with some decent backup for their main talisman.
The face he can also operate on the left-wing just adds to the relevance of Tottenham wanting to land him this summer.
Back in August he drew praise from ex-United striker Robin van Persie. After starring against Copenhagen, he called him ‘world-class’ for his efforts in the Europa League win.
Martial could be smart Tottenham signing
Although his form has been somewhat sporadic for United, he is still a pretty decent player at Premier League level.
A big stumbling block could be the player’s salary. He earns £250,000-a-week at Old Trafford and that could deter Tottenham from moving.
If they could convince the £36 million star to take a lesser salary in exchange for more frequent football, however, he could prove a coup.
Martial is quick, can play through the middle or out wide and he knows all about performing in the Premier League.
