Tottenham Hotspur have allegedly cooled their interest in Cristian Romero and are interested in Chris Smalling.
What’s the story?
According to Enrico Camelio (on CMIT TV), the track for the Argentine defender has ‘cooled down’. The journalist says that ‘it seems’ to him as if Spurs are looking at Chris Smalling.
The former Manchester United defender has spent the last two seasons with AS Roma. However, he endured an injury-hit campaign last year and made just 21 appearances in all competitions.
A shift in targets come after reports over a hold up in talks between the two clubs. It is said the Lilywhites don’t want to meet Atalanta’s asking price.

From Romero to Smalling: Tottenham shouldn’t target the Englishman
From Romero to Smalling, it’s a drastic change in transfer targets and Tottenham should not sign the Englishman.
The former England international has struggled massively with injury problems throughout his time in Rome.
Romero was the ideal target after impressing for Atalanta. His ability both on and off the ball, as well as his good injury record, were a massive appeal.
His profile and youth made him the perfect option to replace Toby Alderweireld.
However, the opposite is true for Smalling who, at 31, would be a poor replacement.
You feel as though there was a reason Manchester United sold the player in the first place.
To sign Smalling would be a massive backwards step for Tottenham this summer.
