Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho has contacted Real Madrid to discuss the signing of central defender Eder Militao, according to Spanish outlet El Desmarque.
The report claims that Mourinho has personally contacted Florentino Perez about the player’s availability in the case that Jan Vertonghen leaves the club in the summer.
The Belgian is out of contract during the summer and could walk away from Tottenham with a new deal not forthcoming as of yet.
Militao only signed for Real Madrid in the summer, costing £45 million from Porto.
He has failed to sufficiently impress Zinedine Zidane, however, and has dropped down the pecking order with the La Liga title hopefuls.
Despite the 22-year-old playing just 13 times in all competition this season, it is claimed that Zidane wants to recoup £70 million for the Brazilian.
El Desmarque do also say that Mourinho will try and lower the cost of the player who is way out of favour at the Bernabeu.
Militao did get a rare chance to impress on Sunday when Real Madrid lost 2-1 to Real Betis. He started a right-back and endured a torrid time up against Nabil Fekir.
A central defender is likely to be on Mourinho’s shopping list during the summer.
Even if Vertonghen does stick around, he will be 33 in April and Tottenham must consider a younger option for the future.
Toby Alderweireld signed a new deal earlier in the season and will probably remain the first choice defender during 2020/21.
Davinson Sanchez is also at the club but as a potential star of the future, Mourinho clearly fancies Militao as a solution.
Tottenham drew 1-1 on Saturday and their defensive struggles have been highlighted with no clean sheets in seven matches.
