Report: Tottenham coaches really think 22-year-old youngster could develop into a 'phenomenal' player
Tottenham Hotspur coaches think that Japhet Tanganga could become ‘phenomenal’, the Athletic say.
A star is born
Tanganga is regarded by some Spurs coaches as the best one-on-one defender at the club and that was on full display at the weekend.
The 22-year-old produced arguably the best performance of his career as Tottenham beat Manchester City 1-0.
Tanganga dealt with the dual threat of Raheem Sterling and Jack Grealish brilliantly.
His aggressive approach meant that City’s attacking talents were barely given a sniff throughout the contest.
One of the best?
And one Tottenham coach has now told the Athletic there is a feeling that Tanganga could develop into one of the very best right-backs in the Premier League due to his defensive qualities.
Tottenham have had issues at right-back for a number of seasons now, so if Tanganga could fulfil his potential it would be a major boost to the North London club.
Neither Serge Aurier or Matt Doherty convinced last year.
And while Tanganga still needs to prove his quality over a run of games before he fully nails down the spot, his start to the season on Sunday was hugely encouraging.
