Tottenham have are reportedly closing in on signing Wolverhampton Wanderers defender Matt Doherty.
Spurs have been linked with the 28-year-old in recent days and the latest reports suggest that a deal is close to being completed.
According to the Independent, Jose Mourinho’s side are closing in on a deal for the right-back, who has been a regular in the Wolves team for several seasons and been impressive as a Premier League performer in the last two years.
The report explains that Wolves want around £20million for the Republic of Ireland international, but Spurs are considering a lower bid and could make up the difference with add-ons.
Doherty, who earns £50,000-a-week, is being eyed as an upgrade to Serge Aurier in the right-back position and he’s excellent in the top-flight since Wolves were promoted two years ago.
He has mastered the wing-back role in an organised Wolves system, which is one that allows him get forward to join attacks and he’s often a spare man out wide.
The attack-minded full-back ended last season with an impressive seven goals and five assists in 50 appearances across all competitions.

TBR’s View:
Mourinho has already signed a defensive midfielder in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg this summer from Southampton and it looks like he’s now on the verge of adding a right-back to his squad.
Doherty has made a seamless transition to Premier League football in the past two seasons, which is why he could be a shrewd piece of business for Spurs and especially at lower than £20million.
Mourinho appears to be bolstering his squad with players that have Premier League know-how and his best teams are usually built from the back, which is why Doherty fits the bill considering he’s defensively astute and has been part of a solid Wolves defence.
