Report: Tottenham boss Jose Mourinho wants Benfica centre-back Ruben Dias
Tottenham are reportedly set to target signing a centre-forward and a centre-back this summer once deals for Real Madrid pair Gareth Bale and Sergio Reguilon are completed.
According to the Evening Standard, Spurs manager Jose Mourinho wants to continue overseeing a squad overhaul in this summer transfer window.
It is understood that attacker Bale and left-back Reguilon have flown together to London on Friday ahead of their double signing, with the duo already completing medicals.
The report adds that Bale will be returning to his former club on a season-long loan, while Reguilon is going to join on a £27million deal and that will include a buy-back clause for Madrid.
The Evening Standard claims that Spurs will still be in the market for a centre-back and Benfica’s Ruben Dias is the one of the preferred options for Mourinho.
The report explains Benfica previously refused to sell the 23-year-old, but due to the fact they missed out on Champions League football this season they may need to rethink their stance.
He’s a highly-rated defender that is represented by Mourinho’s longtime associate Jorge Mendes.
Spurs fans certainly can’t point any blame towards the board over a lack of ambition, as they have completed some low-key impressive signings already this window and they are now about to send out a real statement with the capture of two Madrid players that could improve their XI.
Mourinho’s successful teams have always been built on strength at the back though and reported target Dias is an intriguing option.
The Portuguese ball-playing centre-back has been a talisman for the Benfica side since coming through their academy and he’s already earned 19 senior caps for his country too.
He is an all-action defender that would strengthen the options at the back and it would be intriguing to see if he would replace Toby Alderweireld or Eric Dier from the starting XI.
