Tottenham Hotspur are becoming big contenders to sign Benfica’s Darwin Nunez, according to A Bola.

The Portuguese outlet, via Sport Witness, claims Spurs are ’emerging in strength’ in pursuit of his signature.

A Bola also claims Tottenham have had their eye on Nunez for a long time now.

Spurs apparently had the Uruguay international on a ‘prospect list’ since his Almeria days.

This was when Jose Mourinho was in charge at Tottenham.

However, Spurs reportedly didn’t have the money to invest in Nunez back then.

Now, the 22-year-old has become one of the best young strikers in world football.

But while the report claims Tottenham are now back in pursuit, it’s not all good news.

A Bola also claims Nunez is being lined up as a potential replacement for Harry Kane.

Spurs are reportedly considering selling the 28-year-old striker in the summer.

If the report is true, it’s very much a mixed bag – signing Nunez would be superb, but losing Kane would be painful.

“World-class” striker in the making

Nunez became Benfica’s club-record signing in 2020 when they spent £20.5m to land his signature.

He had previously shone at Almeria, scoring 16 goals and claiming two assists from 30 Spanish second-tier games.

And prior to that, Nunez came through the ranks at Penarol, where he won the Uruguayan league title in 2018.

This season, the 6ft 2in powerhouse is in top form, with a staggering 26 goals and two assists from 33 games.

Scouting site Breaking the Lines sung Nunez’s praises back in 2021.

“Darwin Nunez is a shotgun striker, so to speak,” they wrote.

“His movement menacingly incalculable, whilst his killer instincts remain a factor for his foes to be wary of, worried about, but with little by way of averting the inevitable.

“In no uncertain terms, the inevitable tends to be the Benfica forward’s rocket-fuelled right foot – but his overpowering presence appears in many forms.”

Former Benfica boss Jorge Jesus even described him as a “world-class” striker in the making.
