Report: Tottenham battling Atalanta for Benfica's Tomas Tavares
Tottenham Hotspur and Atalanta are positioned at the front of the queue in the race to sign Benfica full-back Tomas Tavares, according to a report from The Sunday People (23/8; page 58).
Jose Mourinho’s men are arguably looking a little light at right-back as their pre-season gets underway. And Sky Sports reported this week that the club are willing to sell Serge Aurier this summer.
Juan Foyth is capable of playing out wide. Meanwhile, Gedson Fernandes was extremely impressive in the role in the pre-season win over Ipswich Town on Saturday.
Nevertheless, Mourinho is hoping to strengthen in that position. And one of Gedson’s teammates is one of the players on his wishlist.
According to The Sunday People (23/8; page 58), Spurs want Tavares, who is valued at £9 million. It is also claimed that Atalanta are keen, along with clubs from Spain and France.
The report claims that it is currently looking like a straight fight between Tottenham and Atalanta for the 19-year-old.
TBR View: Tavares could prove a shrewd signing for Spurs
Tavares is a teenager. But he made 12 top flight appearances last season. He also featured five times in the Champions League. And he offers some versatility as he is also comfortable playing at left-back.
He offers the kind of physicality that Mourinho appears to like in a full-back. But he also boasts a lot of pace that could prove extremely beneficial if Aurier is on his way this summer.
There may be an element of risk attached to a potential deal. But a move would not cost an eye-watering amount, so perhaps it could be another smart piece of business if Tottenham do manage to see off Atalanta.
