Report: Tottenham and Villa want Argentina striker, £21.3m release clause
CalcioMercato say that Tottenham and Aston Villa are interested in signing River Plate and Argentina striker Julian Alvarez, but face competition.
Alvarez, 21, has been excellent for River since breaking into the senior side. Clocking up 85 appearances, Alvarez has 44 goal involvements in that time.
Scoring 23 times, he has laid on 21 assists. The more Alvarez plays, the better he gets. This season, he scored seven goals in 11 games for River.
That form has attracted interest in his services. Premier League duo Spurs and Villa want the two-time Argentina international.
His contract ends in December 2022 and it is likely to tempt River into his sale. Bayer Leverkusen and Borussia Dortmund are also said to be keen.
Alvarez could be a bargain, with a release clause of £21.3million included in his contract. The 5ft 6in forward can play out wide, too.
Tottenham and Villa eye Alvarez: Which club suits him best?
Well, Villa have options up top. Danny Ings joined the club in the summer, competing with Ollie Watkins. Bertrand Traore can also play as a nine.
He would be a good signing because he offers something different, but if Villa need to buy players in January – a midfielder is probably better.
For Spurs, they certainly could do with Alvarez. Tottenham lack cover for Harry Kane and one would expect that Alvarez would be open to the move.
He would be happy to sit as back-up to Kane. So, if it was a straight shootout between Spurs and Villa – surely Tottenham makes sense?
