Italian outlet Leggo have claimed Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are interested in signing Roma wonderkid Nicolo Zaniolo, with both clubs said to have been pressing for the Italian midfielder for quite some time.
Zaniolo, 20, is regarded as one of the most-exciting products to have come through Italian football’s academies of late. Indeed, he has already won five Italy caps and has clocked up 60 senior outings for Roma.
Such form, at such a young age, has seen him linked with a move to England. Zaniolo does not want to leave Roma, but both Spurs and United know that Roma may need to bring in some cash if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.
An offer of £53million for Zaniolo is likely to be accepted by Roma sporting directoor Gianluca Petrachi if such an offer is tabled. Tottenham and United are said to have been trying to sign Zaniolo for quite some time.
Earlier this year, Roma legend Francesco Totti was quoted by Roma Press as saying that Zaniolo could leave: “I hope he can remain at Roma as long as possible even if I don’t think this will be the case. They could sell him, yes. Anything could happen from now until June.”
TBR’s view – Zaniolo versatility makes him ideal for Spurs
He would be a good signing for United, too, but the presence of Bruno Fernandes, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata – attacking midfielders that can also be used deeper or out wide – would see United add Zaniolo to a list of players they already have.
Spurs boast Gio Lo Celso but he is best used in central midfield, while Dele Alli needs plenty of freedom. Other than that, Spurs have little options in the final third and still need a replacement for Christian Eriksen.
Zaniolo, who can play in central midfield, a number 10 or out wide, would be a top signing for Spurs.
