Report: Tottenham and Everton join race to sign Euro 2020 midfielder
Portuguese newspaper Record have claimed that Tottenham and Everton are two of four teams looking to sign Sporting Lisbon ace Joao Palhinha. Part of Portugal’s Euro 2020 side, Palhinha has starred at club level over the last 12 months. Tottenham and Everton want Palhinha, but are not alone.
The 25-year-old defensive midfielder has been in excellent form for Sporting, as the Portuguese outfit beat Benfica and Porto to the Liga NOS title. He missed just four of Sporting’s 42 fixtures during 2020-21, due to a positive test at the start of the campaign. His consistency is eye-catching.
It is the third player in Portugal’s Euro 2020 side to be linked with Spurs. Bernardo Silva could be included in a deal for Harry Kane according to The Athletic. Sergio Oliveira is said to be waiting on Spurs to sign him. Now, Palhinha is a target. Tuga Scout claim he has a £51.5million release clause.
Do Tottenham or Everton need Palhinha?
Well, Tottenham have a brilliant holding midfielder in Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. They need a midfielder, one that is more progressive alongside Hojbjerg. But the five-time Portugal international is very defensive, he can play at centre-back as well as midfield. Eric Dier can do that,
Everton, meanwhile, have Allan, Tom Davies and Fabian Delph as options. When Jean-Philippe Gbamin finally returns, they will have a player that can do holding midfield and centre-back. While Sporting might not charge his entire release clause, surely Everton and Spurs don’t particularly need him.
