Report: Tottenham and Chelsea could consider Italy's Euro 2020 defender, Fonseca knows him well
The Daily Express have claimed that Tottenham and Chelsea could go after Italy defender Leonardo Spinazzola this summer. The left-back is shining in the blue of the Azzurri at Euro 2020, even getting the man-of-the-match award against Turkey. Both Spurs and Chelsea are touted as options.
Spinazzola, 28, has enjoyed arguably the best 12 months of his footballing career. In his second season with Roma, the 16-time Italy ace shone under Paulo Fonseca – who is now set to be announced as Tottenham gaffer. Clocking up 39 appearances during 2020-21, he even had a hand in 10 goals.
His form has continued under Roberto Mancini with Italy at this summer’s tournament. Italy have secured two successive 3-0 wins over Switzerland and Turkey and Spinazzola has been crucial – on the left side of the defence. It has been claimed that Tottenham and Chelsea are ‘fast becoming options’.
Spinazzola would be brilliant for Tottenham and Chelsea
As the report states, Marcos Alonso and Emerson Palmieri are expected to leave Chelsea in the coming weeks and months. They need a left-back to cover Ben Chilwell, one that can play in a four-man defence or as a wing-back. Spinazzola would be the ideal option – but he might not start.
At Tottenham, he certainly would. Sergio Reguilon started well at Spurs but ended the season in poor form – including two howlers against Aston Villa. Ben Davies is a good player, but a squad option and the kind of player happy to be back-up. Spinazzola makes sense at Spurs.
Fonseca signed Spinazzola for £25million (Eurosport) in 2019 – and now, it makes sense to go back in for the ex-Atalanta star.
