Tottenham made contact over signing Allan Saint-Maximin from Newcastle United on a bargain deal this summer.
The Athletic claim that Spurs were among the clubs who thought that the Frenchman might be available at a knockdown price.
That is because the Magpies were expected to spend big after the takeover and Saint-Maximin could well have become surplus to requirements.
Or at the very least, a saleable asset to balance the books if Eddie Howe went big in the transfer market.

Tottenham eyed Saint-Maximin bargain
But that did not prove to be the case, with Newcastle quoting a price of well in excess of £40 million if they were to let the winger go.
That pricetag put off all suitors, including Tottenham, who went on to invest in Richarlison to boost their attacking options this summer instead.
Tottenham reportedly made tentative enquiries via intermediaries, making their move, but the swoop did not get any further than that.

The report says that Saint-Maximin could be in line for a new deal as Newcastle adjust to their new salary structure after the takeover.
But there is also onus on Saint-Maximin to reiterate his importance to the squad and prove that he deserves a pay rise in the months ahead.
Otherwise, perhaps the transfer interest will persist into the winter window, even if Tottenham signing Richarlison could perhaps rule them out moving forward.
