Italian website TuttoMercatoWeb have claimed that Torino are ‘close’ to striking an agreement with Portuguese side Benfica to sign midfielder Gedson Fernandes – which would see him return from Tottenham before travelling to Italy.
Gedson, 22, has struggled since joining Tottenham on an 18-month loan-to-buy deal from Benfica in January 2020. The Portugal international has since played just 14 times for Spurs, only twice this season – with his latest outing against Marine.
He is unlikely to add to that total in the second half of the season when games become more important, and therefore a move this month is crucial. TMW claim that Torino are interested and are closing in on a deal with Benfica to nab Gedson.
The report also claims that Joe Hart’s former loan side could complete a move to sign Fernandes in the ‘next few hours’ – with Sky Italy journalist Gianluca Di Marzio since claiming that a move is expected to go.
TBR’s view – Gedson needs to leave, Serie A could suit him
Torino is an excellent move for a player that has failed to show his potential at Tottenham. In fact, he has shown very little during his time at Spurs – other than he is somewhat versatile, and can play both out wide and in the middle of the park.
Serie A could suit him. A division where the pace, and quality, is slower. Gedson’s injection of speed could see him shine in Italy, but whether he starts for Torino is another story altogether. If he gets the chance to join Torino, then it is a no brainer.
