Report: 'Terrific' West Ham player's performances in training have improved so much recently
Downes started and impressed as the Hammers won 1-0 away from home against Anderlecht in the UEFA Conference League last night.
The Athletic report the midfielder has regularly stayed behind after training to do extra sessions with fitness coaches as he needed time to adjust to Moyes’ methods, his style of play and the intensity of training.
They claim in the last month, the former Swansea midfielder’s displays in training have really improved and he is in Premier League contention now.
Downes impressing in training
Downes also earned praise from David Moyes last night, who said: “Downes played really well tonight.
“I thought him and Jarrod Bowen were really good but Flynn has given us something to think about. He’s only just starting to get the feel of it in training, he’s beginning to get used to what we want. He did a really good job tonight.”
Ben Johnson added in an interview with the club website: “I’m really pleased for Flynn.
“I’ve always said to him that he’ll be important for us and he’s put it in with a couple of performances now, in training and in the games he’s played.
“He had a terrific game tonight and all credit to him for patience. Hopefully he can come in and show what he can do more.”
It can take time for players to get used to life at a new club and that seems to be the case for Downes but he is through the worst of it now.
He is a realistic contender for Tomas Soucek’s spot in the side for Premier League games and that is the competition for places Moyes needs.
West Ham needed depth and variety in their squad and performances like this from players like Downes will only help with that.
