Report: Tanganga was reason Tottenham pulled out of Tomiyasu deal
What’s the story?
According to the publication, it was assumed the player would end up at Tottenham after he was tracked for most of the summer.
However, Tanganga was given an opportunity in the opening game against Manchester City. He impressed heavily, earning rave reviews from Gary Neville for his performance.
As a result, it assuaged the need for a more ‘defensive right-back’, hence why the club opted for Emerson Royal.
The Brazilian joined Tottenham on a five-year contract for a fee believed to be £25.7m from Barcelona.
The majority of his strengths lie in the final third, where he was immense for Real Betis last season.
He created more chances and put in more crosses than any Betis defender last campaign.
Is it wise for Tottenham to use on Tanganga display to sign Royal over Tomiyasu?
Tanganga has reshaped the thinking of the Spurs hierarchy due to his fantastic performances.
But, is it wise for Tottenham to use a few Tanganga displays to sign Royal over Tomiyasu?
One performance should not be affecting the thinking of the coaching staff. While the ‘phenomenal’ academy product was great versus the Citizens, there is no guarantee he will carry that level on moving forward.
At just 22, playing week in, week out will be tricky for the youngster.
Meanwhile, we have seen just how wrong it can go when using attacking full-backs.
Serge Aurier arrived with a big reputation for his ability to attack. And it is fair to say he delivered some stunning performances going forward, but his defending was sometimes shambolic.
It is hard to find the perfect full-back who thrives at both ends of the field. But, relying on Tangana on the back of a few performances is a decision that could backfire this season.
