Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo have claimed that Barcelona are looking for a back-up striker to replace Luis Suarez when he is unavailable to play, and two surprise candidates have landed themselves on Barca’s shortlist.
Liverpool striker Divock Origi is one of those, after the Belgian scored a brace against Barcelona. He was crucial in the Reds’ unbelievable comeback at Anfield to win 4-3 in the semi-finals at Anfield.
The 24-year-old struggled at Wolfsburg on loan last season and has only played 20 times for Liverpool this season. He has scored six goals, but that brace against Barca and the winner in a 1-0 victory over Everton have been crucial.
Origi is not the only surprise candidate on Barca’s shortlist. Tottenham Hotspur target man Fernando Llorente has also been mentioned, especially now that he is set to leave Spurs on a free transfer.
Barcelona want a striker that has proven they can shine in the latter stages of the Champions League, in case Suarez is unavailable. Llorente shone against Ajax and Manchester City, especially in the second semi-final leg.
Barcelona are one of the favourites for next season’s Champions League, while both Liverpool and Tottenham will want to prove that reaching the final is not a fluke.
Spurs have no say in whether Llorente moves to the Nou Camp, given that he is free to talk to any clubs. But Liverpool must do their utmost to keep Belgium international Origi.
Though both rather surprising targets for Barcelona, the impact of both in the final knockout stages of the Champions League has shown they can perform as back-up strikers.
