The Sun on Sunday (26/1; page 61) reports that he is out of contract at the end of the season. And it is suggested that Blackburn Rovers have registered an interest in taking him to Ewood Park this month.

But it appears that Sunderland have received a boost late on in the window.

According to The Sun on Sunday, McLaughlin is not planning to leave Sunderland this month. However, that will not put an end to the uncertainty.

The report notes that the 32-year-old wants to earn a lucrative new deal with the Black Cats – and he is prepared to walk away in the summer if he is not offered the terms he is looking for.

TBR View – McLaughlin demands put Sunderland under greater promotion pressure

McLaughlin has done well since arriving at Wearside. And his form in recent months has arguably vindicated his decision to hold out for the best deal possible.

You would have to go back to early October for the last league game in which McLaughlin conceded two goals in a single fixture.

He has also kept three clean sheets in a row in his last three appearances.

It would arguably be a big boost for Sunderland if they could keep McLaughlin beyond this season.

But to do that, it may be fair to suggest that promotion is looking like a must – with McLaughlin keen to secure the best terms possible.
