Report: Sunderland want to sign 'undroppable' 21-year-old who can play anywhere on the pitch
Sunderland have reportedly joined the race to sign Ali McCann.
Sunderland aren’t the only ones reportedly interested in McCann, however.
The likes of Celtic, Stoke and Hull are apparently also eyeing the St Johnstone ace.
Club chairman Steve Brown values McCann at around £2million, added The Courier.
The player’s contract runs until 2023 so his club isn’t under pressure to sell on the cheap.
Sunderland eyeing double cup winner?
McCann came through the ranks at the Perth club and has already made 84 senior appearances.
He helped them secure a wonderful cup double last season as they ron the Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup.
In addition, McCann has also won five senior caps for Northern Ireland.
A central midfielder by trade, he has also played in front of the back line and further up at No. 10.
“The sort of player you can put anywhere on the pitch”
Last season, McCann even featured as a right wing-back, earning praise from manager Callum Davidson.
“I knew Ali could play there,” he told the Daily Record in January after the Dundee United clash.
“He is the sort of player you can put anywhere on the pitch and he will grasp what is required.
“He did a great job going about his wing-back role.
“I don’t see him there in the long run but, like David Wotherspoon, Ali can play in three or four different positions.”
“Done exceptionally well”
Former teammate Jason Holt said last summer that he was a “big fan” of McCann.
Speaking to Herald and Times Sport, he said: “I’m a big fan of Ali McCann. I think he has done exceptionally well this season and I’ve been really impressed.
“Since I went in he was definitely one of the players that I was really impressed with especially at such a young age.
“He got his place in the team at the start of the season, and to keep it, it is testament to himself and the performances he has been putting in. He has been undroppable.
“He’s definitely got the potential to go on to bigger things. He has a great head on his shoulders and he is very down to earth.”
