According to the print edition of The Sun on Sunday (9th June, page 61), Lawrence Shankland is back on Sunderland’s radar this summer.

Sunderland were linked with Shankland ahead of the January transfer window. Using Jack Ross’ knowledge of the Scottish leagues, Sunderland were tempted to sign Shankland (Wales Online).

Shankland’s goalscoring record in the past two seasons has been phenomenal. The 23-year-old scored 34 goals in 41 games for Ayr United last season in the Scottish Championship.

This takes his overall tally to 61 goals (and 24 assists) in just 73 games. Therefore, it is no surprise to see Sunderland among the clubs interested in Shankland.

Will Grigg and Charlie Wyke share the attacking responsibilities at The Stadium of Light. But neither striker has been able to replace Josh Maja’s goals.

Ross will be hoping that Shankland can fill Maja’s boots. Since the 20-year-old departed to join Bordeaux, Sunderland have been looking for his replacement.

Shankland will be available on a free transfer. With Grigg and Shankland in the attack, the Black Cats could push for automatic promotion again next season.

However, Sunderland will not be alone in this transfer pursuit. According to The Daily Star, Celtic and Rangers are also looking at Shankland. Whether they firm up their interest remains to be seen.
