Sunderland are pressing ahead in their attempts to sign a left-back before the deadline. According to The Northern Echo, Sunderland are preparing an improved offer for Sheffield Wednesday defender Morgan Fox.

Jack Ross wants to add a new left-back to his ranks this summer. Bryan Oviedo, Donald Love and Adam Matthews all left, leaving Denver Hume as the only recognised left-back on Sunderland’s books.

Hume’s form has been mixed but Ross wants a new player to compete with him. Fox is now Sunderland’s top target after Joel Lynch completed the centre-back ranks. Sheffield Wednesday will now consider a second bid after Sunderland’s first approach was knocked back at the weekend.

Fox has played 73 times for Sheffield Wednesday since his January 2017 switch from Charlton Athletic. The ex-Wales U21 defender has played twice this season, filling in for Liam Palmer, but he is now a back-up option at best.

Sunderland could offer the 25-year-old a lifeline by giving him the chance to drop down a division. Ross wants to get this one done well before the deadline next Monday.

TBR’s view

Fox has struggled at times during his spell with Sheffield Wednesday. Lee Bullen clearly favours Palmer above him and Fox could do with a fresh start elsewhere. This is why a move to Sunderland could be perfect for all parties.

If Sunderland match the Owls’ asking price, then both teams will be pleased with their deal. Fox can provide competition with Hume, reignite his career at Sunderland and aid a promotion push.
