According to a report from The Sun on Sunday (20/10; page 65), Sunderland were scared off making a move for Wigan Athletic boss Paul Cook because the Latics wanted £1 million in compensation.
The Black Cats spent much of the international break looking for a new manager after Jack Ross’s departure. It was ultimately announced that Phil Parkinson had been appointed at the Stadium of Light.

The Sun reported during Sunderland’s search that Cook was interested in the role. And with the Englishman winning a number of promotions during his managerial career, including the League One title with Wigan, it would have been no surprise if plenty of supporters were in favour of an approach for him.
And it appears that Sunderland may have seriously considered making a move. The Sun on Sunday (20/10; page 65) suggests that Wigan’s seven-figure fee demands put the Black Cats off.

With some accomplished managers available, it is probably no surprise that Sunderland decided against meeting the Latics’ demands.
Parkinson is one of those to have tasted promotion from the third tier in the past. His tenure did not get off to the best start at the weekend. However, he has the track record to suggest that he could prove to be a success on Wearside.
But with reports recently suggesting that a current Championship boss was keen on the role, perhaps it would be fair to say that Parkinson is already under additional pressure to make an impact.
