Sunderland youngster Luke Hewitson is one of several academy players who could be poached in the summer, according to reports.

According to the print edition of The Sun on Sunday – via HITC Sport – Liverpool are lining up a move for Sunderland teenager Hewitson.

The under-14 goalkeeper has been invited to Liverpool for talks and to train with the club’s academy side.

And according to reports in the local media, Hewitson could be one of three Sunderland youngsters heading to Liverpool in the near future.

The Merseyside outfit have already taken James McConnell and Harrison Jones on trial, as per The Chronicle.

Jones is a striker who has been training with the England under-15 squad, while McConnell operates on the wing.

Liverpool have former Sunderland academy graduate Jordan Henderson on their books but could be adding three more youngsters soon.

Sunderland have prided themselves on producing good young players in recent years but they cannot afford to lose their most promising talents.

The Black Cats currently have the likes of Denver Hume, George Honeyman and Lynden Gooch starring in the first-team but have lost several talented youngsters recently.

Sunderland need to ensure that Hewitson, Jones and McConnell do not go the same way as Joel Asoro and Josh Maja, who departed for Swansea City last summer and Bordeaux in January respectively.
