Report: Sunderland battling Championship duo Barnsley and Luton for Jon Taylor

Sunderland are one of the clubs interested in signing Jon Taylor. According to a report by TEAMtalk, newly-promoted Championship pair Barnsley and Luton Town will battle Sunderland for Taylor.

The 26-year-old is currently at Rotherham United but his contract expires at the end of June. Fresh terms have not been agreed so he will become a free transfer this summer.

Sunderland are pushing hard to land this bargain. Taylor is an experienced winger at Championship and League One level and he could replace Lewis Morgan at The Stadium of Light.

Morgan was brought in last January on loan from Celtic. But his temporary spell has expired, meaning Jack Ross needs a new winger for the 2019/20 campaign.

However, the Black Cats will face a challenge convincing Taylor to play League One football with Championship offers on the table.

Barnsley and Luton both pipped Sunderland to automatic promotion last season. Now they want to use their superior league status to win the race for Taylor.

TBR’s view

Taylor would be a bargain for whoever lands him, considering his experience in the second and third tiers of English football. With nearly 350 senior appearances under his belt, he is entering the prime of his career with bags of experience behind him.

But his stats last season were not exactly impressive. The former Shrewsbury Town and Peterborough United winger scored four goals and provided one assist last season.

Taylor would be a coup for League One Sunderland as he has 34 goals and 19 assists in 174 games at this level. But the Championship duo might want to aim higher, although a free transfer is a low-risk way of bulking out their squad.
