Report suggests Tottenham Hotspur could hand Fernando Llorente contract reprieve

Fernando Llorente might yet have a future at Tottenham Hotspur, despite his contract with the club expiring last month.

Tottenham beat Chelsea to Llorente’s signing in the summer of 2017 from Swansea City. As reported by The Telegraph, the Spanish striker cost a fee in the region of £14 million.

The Spaniard’s deal at Spurs expired on the 30th June and he is currently a free agent. However, his performances toward the end of last season highlighted how he can still play a role at the club. In particular, his display against Ajax in the crucial Champions League semi-final second-leg, showed he is still a viable option.

Now, according to The Guardian, Spurs could still keep Llorente next season.

The report claims that Spurs have allowed Llorente to search for a new club in his Spanish homeland. However, if the 34-year-old fails to find a new club in that time Spurs could bring him back to the club on reduced terms from his previous £100,000-a-week contract.

It is certainly a deal that makes sense for Tottenham.

Harry Kane is still the main striking option at Spurs and in his absence, the club lacks genuine out-and-out replacements.

With the list of known Spurs transfer targets not currently featuring a striker, losing Llorente could be a big blow – especially with Vincent Janssen’s future at the club doubtful.

Llorente has built up a good rapport with Spurs fans who would no doubt love to have the striker back at the club next season. Especially if he has more performances like his Ajax one up his sleeve.
