Report suggests Tottenham could still ‘make an enquiry’ for Olivier Giroud despite new deal

Tottenham Hotspur could still make a move for Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud this summer, according to Football.London.

Tottenham were heavily linked with Giroud in the January transfer window as his contract at Stamford Bridge entered its final six months.

When no deal happened, it was considered a strong possibility that Spurs would try and sign him on a free transfer in the summer.

But Giroud had a one-year extension activated in his deal last month meaning Chelsea can keep him for the 2020-21 campaign.

Despite this, Football.London’s Alasdair Gold reported his belief this week that Spurs will ‘make an enquiry’ for the Frenchman this summer.

As he states, Giroud ‘ticks plenty of boxes’ and is set to fall even further down the pecking order with Chelsea’s reported (Telegraph) £53 million move for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner.

It could be Chelsea secured Giroud to a new deal, simply to avoid him leaving for nothing. However, the idea of selling to a direct rival could see Tottenham out of luck if Jose Mourinho wants Giroud as Harry Kane’s main back-up.

Mourinho seemingly wanted Giroud in January and might be hopeful his old club are willing to talk a cheap deal for the player this summer. In the winter, as reported by The Times, Chelsea wanted £9 million for Giroud with just six months left on his contract, so a similar price-tag is likely this summer considering his 12-month deal.
