Report suggests the real reason behind Everton’s apparent Morgan Sanson interest

Everton are reportedly interested in a deal for Morgan Sanson. The Marseille midfielder has long been linked with a move to the Premier League and the Toffees are the latest club to seemingly show an interest.

The Daily Express claim Everton are hopeful of taking advantage of a gentleman’s agreement between Sanson and the Ligue 1 club. The report claims the 25-year-old was told he could leave Marseille in the summer of 2020 when he agreed to a new deal in December 2018. As reported by Le 10 Sport, Marseille would want a potential fee of €35 million (£29.3m) for the player.

It would undoubtedly be a welcome move from Everton, considering their own frailties in the middle of the park.

But one report in France has cast doubt on the potential deal. Daily Mercato is suggesting that Marseille’s new special adviser Paul Aldridge could be behind the rumour.

They report that Aldridge will be doing his best to push Sanson toward the Premier League as Marseille need to make money through player sales. Considering their previous success in flogging the likes of Clinton Njie, Georges-Kevin Nkoudou and Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa to English clubs, it makes sense. The report seems to suggest these Everton rumours could be a direct result, as Marseille attempt to drum up interest in their star asset.

Get French Football News highlighted in a brilliant Twitter thread how former West Ham managing director Aldridge has essentially been hired as ‘Head of Selling Players to England’. The Daily Mail later reported on how the appointment may have undermined Marseille boss Andre Villas-Boas.

Sanson is undoubtedly a talented player but Marseille will want a significant fee for the player and it is hard to see how the Frenchman would be a significant upgrade on the likes of Andre Gomes or Fabian Delph.

Everton might be best leaving this purchase for someone else.
