Report suggests Newcastle could move for Matthijs de Ligt
A report from Spanish outlet Sport has suggested that Newcastle could make a future move for Matthijs de Ligt as the club’s new owners look at strengthening their centre-back options.
Another day and another host of names being linked with a potential future move to St James’ Park.
Sport reports that the Magpies want to sign a left-sided centre-back following the takeover on Tyneside, and are looking at Barcelona’s Clement Lenglet.
But they are also setting their sights on one of the most exciting prospects in world football, it seems.
Sport suggests that they could look at de Ligt next summer.
It would be a huge statement to bring the Dutchman to the Premier League. He can play on either side of the defence, and is an incredibly well-rounded player.
And it would take something special to lure him away from Juventus. He cost the Old Lady £67.5 million when he arrived from Ajax back in 2019.
Newcastle clearly have the funds to make a move for almost any player on the planet. So it would be foolish to rule out any move in the years to come.
But signing de Ligt would be a remarkable piece of business.
With all the names flying at Newcastle supporters, it is hard to imagine that supporters will be getting carried away about any of the links right now.
Next summer is a long way off. Newcastle will likely appoint a new manager, and have the January window to get through first. And of course, their priority for this season has to be making sure that they stay in the Premier League.
