Everton are reportedly interested in a move for Lille defender Gabriel Magalhaes this summer. A report from The Independent this week suggested that the Toffees are in talks with Lille regarding a potential move for the Brazilian in the summer.
The report adds that Everton will not be alone in their pursuit of Gabriel, who is valued between £25 million and £30 million.
So when did Everton come across this precocious talent, who has calmly been building a solid reputation in the North of France?
One thing that does appear clear, is that Everton director of football Marcel Brands and recruitment chief Gretar Steinsson. GFFN reported in May last year that Everton went to watch Lille take on Lyon in Ligue 1. The game ended 2-2 and after the game, Brazilian striker Rafael Leao soon started popping up as a potential Everton target. In fact, even before this visit, the Liverpool Echo suggested Leao was on Brands’ radar.
But could it be that another young Brazilian at Lille instead caught the eye on that occasion?
Gabriel had not long broken into the Lille first-team when he faced Lyon that day but has established himself as a regular this season.
Everton missed out on Leao in the summer. As reported by Fabrizio Romano, the young forward rejected the chance to move to England in favour of a £22 million move to AC Milan.
Hopefully, the Toffees have better luck with this similar pursuit.
