Leeds United have decided against making a move for Matty Longstaff, according to a report from the Daily Mail.

Longstaff’s future remains up in the air. The Chronicle reports that he is now a free agent after his Newcastle United contract ended at the end of last season.

And it appears that he has plenty of admirers. The report from the Chronicle suggested that the Magpies want to keep the 20-year-old, while Udinese and Leeds have held talks with the midfielder.

But Newcastle’s hopes of keeping Longstaff appear to have received a boost. According to the Daily Mail, Leeds have decided against a move for the youngster.

It is not clear how close the Whites came to an agreement. So it is difficult to gauge how keen Longstaff is to move on.

Of course, holding talks with other clubs is not a positive sign. But the Magpies can perhaps take some encouragement from the fact that one of his potential exit routes has seemingly been closed off.

While Longstaff’s contract has expired, Leeds would have still had to pay compensation to Newcastle had they brought him to Elland Road this summer.

So perhaps there may be some fans who may not be too disappointed to hear that Leeds are no longer in the running.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side arguably do not need to prioritise signing a new midfielder this summer. So if the Leeds boss is working with a modest budget, signing Longstaff may have seemed unnecessary.
