Long-term Tottenham Hotspur target Bruno Fernandes may be available in January, according to a report in Portugal this week.

Mais Futebol is reporting that Sporting Lisbon might be inclined to sell their star midfielder in the winter as they require the finances.

The report claims that talks over a potential new contract at Sporting have been put on the back-burner as the club could not afford potential new salary demands. They also report that as a result of Tottenham’s transfer bid in the summer, which met a release clause but was rejected anyway, Sporting were due to pay a penalty to Fernandes’ agent. That has not yet been paid and the agent has not asked for it as the consensus is a transfer is in the near future.

No discussions over a new contract will now be held until after the January window, opening up the possibility of Fernandes’ sale in the winter.

Tottenham’s interest in Fernandes has been well-documented. As reported by The Sun, Sporting wanted about £60 million for their star midfielder in the summer but Daniel Levy was not willing to meet such a price.

The player himself spoke of his disappointment at not making the move. The midfielder told GQ Portugal, as relayed by Sky Sports, he was ready to make the move to Tottenham this summer but a deal could not be thrashed out between the two clubs.

It certainly seems that yet again, £60 million might be enough to get a hold of the player and Tottenham clearly need new reinforcements in midfield.

Hopefully, Tottenham can finally get a deal done for the impressive midfield dynamo.
