Erling Braut Haaland has been one of the breakout stars of world football this season. The Norwegian has scored an incredible 40 goals in 33 games this season. The 19-year-old also made a £17 million (Daily Mail) move to German giants Borussia Dortmund.

So the news that he could have been Everton’s might leave Toffees fans disappointed.

ESPN report today that Everton could have signed Haaland for a fee in the region of €10 million (£8 million) back in 2018.

The teenager was reportedly on trial at the club and Everton decided not to pay that amount for the player, instead deciding to back fellow young forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

This story backs up a claim from former director of football Steve Walsh, who told The Athletic about his move for the player.

Haaland went on to become a huge success in Austrian football at Red Bull Salzburg and it could be argued he made the right move for his career.

It has hardly been a steady period for Everton since that interest, with managers and backroom staff coming and going.

But whilst Haaland will feel he has made the right choice, Everton fans will no doubt wonder what might have been.
