Report suggests director of football plans could scupper Newcastle United’s Mauricio Pochettino idea

Newcastle United’s reported search for a director of football to guide the club forward after their long awaited takeover is completed could cause a major stumbling block in their way regarding the potential appointment of Mauricio Pochettino.

Newcastle are set to appoint a new manager to replace Steve Bruce when the Saudi-backed consortium finally completes their takeover of the club.

The Argentine, who was sacked by Tottenham Hotspur in November, is the number one target to take up the hot seat, according to Sky Sports.

However, The Shields Gazette is suggesting that appointing a director of football could leave Newcastle facing a battle to convince Pochettino of taking up the role.

The report claims that Pochettino wants ‘total control over football matters’ if he is to take over from Bruce on Tyneside.

If Newcastle were to bring in a sporting director type, it would likely need to be someone Pochettino trusts in order for him to agree to a move. Paul Mitchell, who has worked with the Argentine at both Southampton and Tottenham is reportedly being considered.

However, it appears that Luis Campos and Domenico Teti are more likely candidates to take up roles at the club, along with long-time Rafa Benitez allies Owen Brown and Frank McParland, according to The Independent.

Newcastle may have to decide on what is more important, a new director of football role and structure to the club, or the prospect of appointing Pochettino as their new manager.
