Report suggests Daniel Levy is ‘annoyed’ at Christian Eriksen for timing of exit wish

Christian Eriksen has confirmed to the media in Denmark that he is looking for a new challenge. The Danish midfielder told Ekstra Bladet that despite the ‘deepest respect’ for Spurs he would like to consider a summer transfer.

Real Madrid appear the likely destination for the midfielder who has just one year left on his contract at the club. Considering this has been on the cards for some time it should not be unexpected. There is also every chance that it could be an amicable split.

The Sun, however, have suggested why Daniel Levy is ‘annoyed’ at Eriksen for his timing of the announcement.

They report that the Tottenham chairman is disappointed Eriksen waited until he was on international duty with Denmark, and out of their jurisdiction, before making this announcement.

The same report also suggests that Levy will demand £80 million for the playmaker. Real are hoping to spend about half that amount.

However, it does make perfect sense that Eriksen would make this announcement now. Players often feel more comfortable talking to the press in their homeland. Eriksen was, also, not only back in Denmark to train with the national team.

As stated by the Danish report, he was also celebrating his son’s first birthday and visiting family. It is likely being back in Denmark allowed him to finally make the decision about his future.

This does not need to be a tumultuous end to Eriksen’s Tottenham career. Spurs cannot afford to lose him on a free and he has been a great servant to the club. Levy should make sure a sale goes through this summer, although £40 million is certainly an amount Real Madrid can improve on.

But for somewhere between the two side’s valuations Tottenham should wish Eriksen well, move on, and use the money to improve the current squad.
